Slavia Prague Faces Severe Sanctions Following Violent Derby Pitch Invasion

The disciplinary committee of the Czech League Football Association (LFA) initiated extraordinary proceedings against Slavia Prague on Sunday, May 10, 2026, following a violent pitch invasion during Saturday’s derby against Sparta Prague.
The match was abandoned in the 97th minute after hundreds of home supporters from the “Tribuna Sever” breached security barriers at Fortuna Arena. At the time of the interruption, Slavia was leading 3-2 and was just seconds away from clinching the Czech league title with three games to spare.
The committee stated that such behavior “will not be tolerated in professional football” and indicated that official punishments, which could include a match forfeit, heavy fines, and extended stadium bans, may be announced as early as Tuesday.
The chaos escalated when fans brandishing flares and smoke bombs targeted Sparta Prague players as they attempted to flee to the locker rooms. Several individuals were physically assaulted, including Slovak goalkeeper Jakub Surovčík, who was reportedly struck in the face by a flare thrown from close range.
Defender Jakub Martinec and forward Matyáš Vojta were also targeted in the melee. Surovčík later expressed his outrage on social media, confirming he would pursue legal action after being threatened and attacked on the field.
Due to extreme safety concerns, the Sparta team abandoned the stadium under police escort before the match could be officially concluded, leaving the status of the league title in limbo.
Slavia Prague Chairman Jaroslav Tvrdík issued a public apology on Sunday, labeling the events as the “most difficult moment in the modern history of the club.”
In an immediate response to the violence, Tvrdík announced the closure of the North Stand, which houses the club’s most ardent supporters, effective immediately. The club has pledged to cooperate fully with police and the FA to identify the perpetrators, promising lifetime stadium bans for those involved.
One individual has already been banned for life after turning himself in for the assault on Surovčík. Meanwhile, the LFA has also opened proceedings against Sparta Prague regarding the use of pyrotechnics and damage to the visitor section during the earlier stages of the match.
