Amazon restored its primary e-commerce services late Thursday after a widespread technical outage disrupted thousands of users across the United States for several hours. The disruption, which began around 2:00 PM ET, prevented shoppers from completing transactions, viewing product prices, or accessing their personal order histories. At its peak, the tracking platform Downdetector recorded more than 22,700 reports of failures, with major hotspots identified in New York, Boston, Chicago, and Seattle. While the incident caused significant frustration for afternoon shoppers, the company confirmed that its website and mobile application had returned to normal operations by the early evening.

An Amazon spokesperson attributed the service failure to an issue within a software code deployment that occurred during routine infrastructure updates. The company issued a formal apology to its customers, noting that the technical glitch was identified and remediated by its engineering teams within a few hours of the initial reports. Beyond the retail storefront, minor service degradations were also observed for Prime Video and Amazon Web Services, although these platforms did not face the same level of comprehensive failure. This event follows a massive global outage in October 2025, which previously highlighted the vulnerabilities of the company’s highly integrated digital ecosystems.

The domestic technical failure adds to a complex week for the Seattle-based company as it navigates physical infrastructure challenges in the Middle East. Earlier this week, Amazon confirmed that drone strikes linked to the intensifying regional conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States had directly struck two data centers in the United Arab Emirates and another facility in Bahrain. While the company has not indicated a direct link between the overseas military activity and the US software deployment error, the proximity of these events has increased scrutiny on the resilience of global cloud networks. Market analysts suggest that even brief disruptions during peak hours can result in substantial revenue losses and impact thousands of third-party vendors who depend on the platform.

By Friday morning, reported incidents had plummeted to negligible levels, with fewer than 500 reports appearing on monitoring services as of 8:00 AM ET. Amazon engineers are expected to conduct a full post-mortem analysis of the deployment pipeline to prevent a recurrence of the software conflict. As the platform stabilizes, the national news cycle remains focused on other significant developments, including the [suspicious link removed] in Georgia and the identifications of four US soldiers killed in Kuwait. Shoppers who continue to experience minor display errors are encouraged to clear their browser caches or update their mobile applications to ensure full functionality.
