Lebanese Army Captures Notorious Drug Kingpin Noah Zeaiter in Major Operation
The Lebanese Army announced the capture of Noah Zeaiter, described as the country’s most wanted drug trafficker and a central figure in the Captagon smuggling network, following a high-stakes operation near Baalbek. The arrest marks a significant victory for Beirut amid regional pressure to crack down on the cross-border narcotics trade.
The Lebanese Armed Forces successfully apprehended Noah Zeaiter, a notoriously dangerous and highly sought-after drug kingpin, during a coordinated security operation on Thursday in the eastern Bekaa Valley. Zeaiter, who has been on the run for years and was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment with hard labor in 2021, was arrested in an ambush along the road between Kneisseh and Baalbek, a known hub for illicit trafficking. The army statement, which referred to the captive only by his initials, described the individual as “one of the most dangerous wanted individuals” facing numerous warrants for crimes including drug and arms trafficking, manufacturing narcotics, armed robbery, and kidnapping.
Zeaiter’s arrest is considered a major victory for the Lebanese government, which has faced mounting pressure from Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, to curb the massive cross-border smuggling of Captagon, a highly addictive amphetamine. The production and export of Captagon, often referred to as “the poor man’s cocaine,” flourished during the Syrian conflict, and its trafficking across the porous border with Lebanon had led to diplomatic friction and a suspension of Saudi imports from Lebanon in 2021. Zeaiter, who is under sanctions from the United States and the United Kingdom, has long been accused of operating a sophisticated narcotics empire with alleged ties to Hezbollah and the former regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
The successful operation follows intensified army raids in the Bekaa region, including a fierce clash with wanted fugitives only two days prior in Baalbek, which resulted in the deaths of two Lebanese soldiers and injuries to three others. Zeaiter’s capture, according to his lawyer, was achieved without resistance after he surrendered to military intelligence. The Lebanese Army affirmed that the detainee is currently undergoing interrogation under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities as part of the country’s plan to dismantle organized crime networks and restore stability to the volatile eastern regions.
